Fontana, Lucio (1899–1968)
Lucio Fontana (b. 19 February 1899; d. 7 September 1968), Argentine sculptor. Born in Rosario, Sante Fe Province, the son of Italian parents, Fontana went to Italy when he was six. He studied at the Brera Royal Academy in Milan, graduating in 1922. The following year he returned to Argentina. In the mid 1920s he was back in Milan studying under Adolfo Widt. After that he lived several years in Paris. Fontana's repertory of forms includes figures that produce a sense of wonder and fascination in the viewer. His sculptures are in various museums and collections in Argentina and Europe. He wrote a series of manifestos on "spatialism," asserting the need to integrate all the physical elements (color, sound, movement, and space) in an ideal material unity. He died in Varese, Italy.
