Fontana, Giovanni Battista
Fontana, Giovanni Battista, Italian composer and violinist; b. Brescia, date unknown; d. Padua, c. 1630. He pursued his career in Brescia, Rome, Venice, and Padua. Fontana was one of the principle figures in the development of the sonata, mostly notable of the solo sonata. A posthumous set of his sonatas, including 6 for Violin or Cornett and Bass, and 12 for 2 Violins and Bass, was publ. in Venice in 1641.
