Cabral, Manuel del (1907–1999)
Manuel del Cabral (b. 7 March 1907, d. 14 May 1999), Dominican poet and writer. Cabral is considered the greatest poet of his country and one of the best of Latin America. He is admired for the variety of his themes, which range from the African roots of Dominican culture to eroticism. His writings include short stories, novels, essays, plays, poems, autobiographies, epistolary confessions, and parables. Cabral has received prizes and awards from many hispanic countries, including the Premio de la Fundación Argentina para la Poesía. His published works include Trópico negro (1941), Manuel cuando no es tiempo, Compadre Mon (1942), Sangre mayor (1945), De este lado del mar (1949), Los huéspedes secretos (1951), La isla ofendida (1965), Los relám-pagos lentos (1966), Los anti-tiempos (1967), Egloga de 2,000 (1970), and Obra poetica (1987).
