Álvarez Armellino, Gregorio Conrado (1925–)
Gregorio Conrado Álvarez Armellino (b. 26 November 1925), Uruguayan military leader and president (1981–1985). Álvarez played an important role from 1973 to 1985, when the armed forces governed the country. The press, including that of the Left, had already popularized the figure of "Goyo" Álvarez, a commanding officer with a nationalist orientation and sympathies toward the leftist militarism of Peruvian General Juan Velasco Alvarado. Álvarez was appointed president by the military regime in 1981. He became one of the elements most opposed to the move toward democracy in Uruguay. After the election of Julio María Sanguinetti to the presidency, the political parties refused to accept the transfer of power directly from General Álvarez. The president of the Supreme Court of Justice had to intervene as a transitional leader in order for the restoration of democracy to be completed.
