Lili Marlene a German song (1917) by Hans Leip (1893–1983) which was popular with both German and Allied soldiers during the Second World War. The song, with its image of Lili Marlene standing beneath the lantern by the barrack gate, became known to Allied troops after it was broadcast to them by Nazi propaganda radio in North Africa in 1941, and an English version of the lyrics was written by Tommie Connor. Leip said that the song was based on two girls he knew called Lili and Marlene.
