Philiphaugh, battle of, 1645. Montrose's brilliant Scottish campaign, which had begun in August 1644 when he met up with a small force from Ireland, received its first check at Philiphaugh, near Selkirk, when he left the Highlands and came down towards the borders. Severely weakened by desertions, his troops were surprised on 13 September 1645 and outnumbered by Leslie. Though most of the cavalry escaped, the survivors of the Irish infantry surrendered, only to be massacred in cold blood.
