Philippa (1394–1430)
Philippa (1394–1430)
Queen of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Name variations: Philippa Plantagenet. Born on July 4, 1394, in Peterborough Castle, Cambridgeshire, England; died on January 5, 1430, at the convent of Valdstena also known as Wadstena, Linkoping, Sweden; interred at the convent of Wadstena; daughter of Mary de Bohun (1369–1394) and Henry IV (1366–1413), king of England (r. 1399–1413); married Erik or Eric VII (or XIII) of Pomerania (1382–1459), king of Denmark (r. 1396–1439), Norway (r. 1389–1442), and Sweden, on October 26, 1406.
Margaret I of Denmark arranged the marriage of Philippa, the daughter of Mary de Bohun and Henry IV, king of England, to her adopted son Eric of Pomerania (Eric VII of Denmark), who was crowned king of each of the Scandinavian kingdoms in 1396. Philippa proved a "good and faithful queen," writes Palle Lauring in The History of the Kingdom of Denmark. When Eric was away at war and Copenhagen was besieged, Philippa, as the highest authority, saved the city.
