Morgannwg, kingdom of. The immediate post-Roman kingdom in south-east Wales was Glywysing, ruled over in ad 600 by Meurig ap Tewdrig. At a later period, it gave way to the kingdom of Morgannwg, which excluded Gwent, and may have been named after Morgan Hen (‘Morgan the Old’), who died 974. The area was quickly penetrated by the Normans after 1066 and Robert Fitzhamon established the lordship of Glamorgan, beginning his castle at Cardiff c.1080.
