Dictionary of National Biography
Dictionary of National Biography. The brainchild of the publisher George Smith. The work began in 1882 with Sir Leslie Stephen as editor and the last volume appeared in 1900. Supplements and updates have followed and Oxford University Press have commissioned a new edition. The original contributors included Sidney Lee, C. H. Firth, S. R. Gardiner, Hastings Rashdall, Creighton, Tout, Tait, Round, and Pollard. In 2004 a completely revised Dictionary was published by Oxford University Press.
