MARION, BATTLE AT

MARION, BATTLE AT (18 December 1864). Union Gen. George Stoneman, raiding southwestern Virginia from eastern Tennessee, struck the Confederates under John C. Breckinridge at Marion, Virginia. During the battle, Stoneman detached a force that moved back to Saltville, Virginia, and destroyed the salt works there. This was his original purpose, even though he could gain no decision against Breckinridge.
