MARCY, R. B., EXPLORATION OF
MARCY, R. B., EXPLORATION OF (1852). This expedition was ordered by the War Department for the purpose of exploring the Red River to its source. The government chose Capt. Randolph B. Marcy, a seasoned veteran of explorations in the southwest and California, to command the expedition. His report of 1853 disclosed that there were two main branches of the Red River; earlier treaties, including the one between Mexico and Texas, admitted but one. Between the two stretched valuable lands, which were made the object of protracted litigation between the United States and Texas in 1896 (sometimes referred to as the Green County dispute).
