Surabaja Port in ne Java, second-largest city in Indonesia, and capital of East Java province. An important naval base occupied by Japan in World War 2, the city remains Indonesia's primary naval centre. A fishing and industrial port with shipyards, textile mills, car-assembly plants and oil refining, it exports rice, sugar cane, spices, tobacco, maize, tapioca, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and copra. Pop. (2000) 2,701,300.
