Born June 22 (some sources cite June 23), 1955. Education: Attended City College of the City University of New York; trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, and School of the Performing Arts, all New York City; attended film school.
Career: Director and writer. Columbia University, instructor in film; Independent Features Project, member of the board of directors. Worked as a dancer and stage actress.
Member: Directors Guild of America.
Awards, Honors: Torino Film Festival Award, best director, and Critics Award nomination, Deauville Film Festival, both 1989, and nomination for grand jury prize, dramatic category, Sundance Film Festival, 1990, all for The Kill-Off; special jury award, Rome-Florence Film Festival, 1994, for The Ballad of Little Jo; Feature Film Prize in Science and Technology, Hamptons International Film Festival, Audience Award and nomination for grand special prize, both Deauville Film Festival, and nomination for grand jury prize, dramatic category, Sundance Film Festival, all 2000, and Dorothy Arzner Prize, Director's View Film Festival, 2002, all for Songcatcher.
