SIDELIGHTS: Ricky Greenwald told CA: "In 1991 I needed a dissertation topic and put something together, wrote the proposal, got committee approval—the whole thing. Then I went to an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) training program and threw the other project away. I did my dissertation on using EMDR with kids, because I believed that this method represented such an advance in the field and, because I was suddenly the expert, I felt a responsibility to get the word out. Over the years I've come to a deeper understanding of what it takes to help kids to recover from trauma and loss. I still feel the responsibility. So there's more to come!
"Research in progress includes two current treatment outcome studies comparing EMDR to CBT for trauma-exposed kids; a multi-site, multi-language validation study of several child trauma assessment instruments; and a multi-site treatment outcome study of a multi-component treatment for juvenile delinquents. In addition to ongoing research on child trauma assessment and treatment, I have been getting involved in research on child trauma treatment training (the impact on trainees and on their clients)."
