Description:

Province-supported, university, coed. Awards bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and first professional degrees. Founded 1963. Setting: 380-acre suburban campus with easy access to Vancouver. Research spending 2003-04: $59 million. Total enrollment: 18,714. Faculty: 698 (664 full-time, 34 part-time). Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 22:1. 7,589 applied, 66% were admitted. Full-time: 10,418 students, 60% women, 40% men. Part-time: 5,492 students, 60% women, 40% men. Students come from 13 provinces and territories, 92 other countries, 13% from out-of province, 28% 25 or older, 16% live on campus, 11% transferred in. Calendar: Canadian standard year. Academic remediation for entering students, ESL program, services for LD students, advanced placement, self-designed majors, honors program, independent study, distance learning, double major, summer session for credit, part-time degree program, adult/continuing education programs, co-op programs and internships, graduate courses open to undergrads. Collegiate Environment:

Campus security: 24-hour emergency response devices and patrols, student patrols, late night transport-escort service. 2,400 college housing spaces available; all were occupied in 2003-04. Freshmen guaranteed college housing. Option: coed housing available. McPherson Library plus 4 others with 1.8 million books, 2.5 million microform titles, 14,000 serials, 17,200 audiovisual materials, an OPAC, and a Web page. Operations spending 2003-04: $13 million. 400 computers available on campus for general student use. A campuswide network can be accessed from student residence rooms and from off campus. Staffed computer lab on campus.

Community Environment:

The university is located in the suburban Gordon Head area of Greater Victoria. It is a 10-minute drive from downtown Victoria and is easily accessible by car, bus, and bicycle. Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, boasts magnificent legislative buildings and a downtown which has been developed to retain its turn-of-the-century architecture and historic landmarks. The city is a thriving center of artistic activity, offering the exceptional Royal British Columbia Museum, several art galleries, a symphony orchestra, an opera company and several professional theatre companies. Greater Victoria has a population of 270,000. The regional economy is based on government, tourism, the University, and growing service, high technology, and clean manufacturing sectors.
