DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM
UNC Pembroke brings education to the student through a number of off-campus and Internet-based programs and courses. The Office of Continuing and Distance Education provides administrative services to the adult or nontraditional learner and takes great pride in assuring the same level of excellence in teaching for which UNCP is widely known.
DELIVERY MEDIA
UNC Pembroke offers a number of face-to-face instructional sites in partnership with community colleges in southeastern North Carolina as well as interactive video classes to a number of sites. For students outside the region, distance education opportunities are available through the World Wide Web in a quickly expanding online program. Online courses are generally asynchronous but demand interaction with the professor.
PROGRAMS OF STUDY
Currently, the University offers the second two years of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in management (in conjunction with approved community colleges and other senior institutions) and the Master of Public Administration completely online. Degree programs in education and computer science and a wide variety of general electives from the arts to the sciences are in the planning stages. For a complete list of courses offered each semester, students should visit the UNCP Office of Continuing and Distance Education Web site at http://www.uncp.edu/ced.
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is committed to providing a variety of continuing education opportunities and special activities that contribute to its mission. Two of the overall purposes of the University are to meet the educational needs of students and to serve the community and society at large by providing cultural and educational leadership. The programs offered through the Office of Continuing Education and Distance Education help carry out the purposes of the University. At UNCP, programs involving continuing education, outreach, and service are coordinated through the Office of Continuing Education and Distance Education.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
UNC Pembroke's Office of Continuing and Distance Education, in conjunction with the Regional Center for Economic, Community, and Professional Development, offers non-credit continuing education programs in a wide variety of subject areas. Special programs can be designed for business, industry, and professional development.
STUDENT SERVICES
All services available to traditional on-campus students are available to distance education students as well. Counselors are available to assist the student with their needs from course selection to career choices, and the Office of Financial Aid provides access to the full range of available financial aid. Library resources are available and accessible via the Internet, and University Computing and Information Services (UCIS) provides a helpline for online students in need of assistance. The University attempts to make online learning easily accessible for the adult or nontraditional student and to make the educational experience beneficial in every way.
Founded in 1887 as a normal school to train Native American public school teachers, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) is located just off Interstate 95 in the coastal plains of North Carolina. A regional public university, UNCP offers fifty-five undergraduate majors and fourteen master's degree programs. Enrollment is 5,000 and growing. The University offers one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report, which also ranks UNCP as one of the most affordable universities in the nation. A member of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference, the University competes in fourteen intercollegiate sports in the NCAA Division II. UNC Pembroke is a constituent member of the University of North Carolina system.
The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits UNC Pembroke to award bachelor's and master's degrees. In addition, a number of the individual University departments, degree programs, and service functions are accredited by appropriate professional organizations.
CREDIT OPTIONS
In general, transfer credits from accredited institutions are readily accepted with a grade of C or better. Transfer from North Carolina community colleges is relatively seamless, and the University makes every effort to allow transfer credit for courses outside the state if the courses are deemed equivalent. The A.S. or A.A. transfer student receives up to 64 hours of credit, while the A.A.S. degree student receives up to 60 hours of transfer credit. The University reviews transfer credit individually and notifies the student as quickly as possible as to which credit is deemed acceptable by the registrar and faculty. Additional credit options include DANTES and CLEP testing.
FACULTY
There are approximately 200 full-time faculty members, most of whom hold the doctorate. Faculty members meet rigorous approval processes established by the respective school or college to which they are assigned. UNC Pembroke is a teaching institution; therefore, most classes are taught by full-time faculty members. Online courses are developed and taught by the same faculty members who teach on campus and provide the learner with well-designed educational experiences.
ADMISSION
First-year students are evaluated on the quality of their college-preparatory classes, standardized test results, and classroom and extracurricular activities. Students must have completed 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics (including algebra I and II and geometry), 2 units of social studies (including U.S. history), and 3 units of science (including 1 biological, 1 physical, and 1 lab course). A recommendation from the high school guidance counselor is helpful, and, in some cases, an interview with an admissions counselor is required.
Transfer students must have a GPA of at least 2.0 on all transferable work. Students who graduated from high school after 1990 may have additional requirements. Transfer applicants who do not meet first-year student admission requirements must complete 6 semester hours in English, mathematics, science, and social science at a community college. Students should call one of the University's admission counselors for details.
TUITION AND FEES
Current tuition and fees for distance learning courses are $51 per under-graduate credit hour for in-state students and $352 per undergraduate credit hour for out-of-state students. Graduate students pay $76 per credit hour in state and $521 per credit hour out of state. Some special programs are billed at special rates. For questions concerning those programs, students should contact the Office of Continuing and Distance Education.
FINANCIAL AID
Distance learning students have full access to any and all financial aid offered by the University. For a complete list of financial aid programs, students should see the Web page for the financial aid office at http://www.uncp.edu/fa/.
