Description: Province-supported, university, coed. Awards bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and first professional degrees. Founded 1906. Setting: 154-acre urban campus. Endowment: $540 million. Community Environment: Edmonton is the provincial capital and largest city of Alberta, with a population of 850,000. It takes its name from Fort Edmonton, an early trading post of the Hudson Bay Company. The city, the center of an important farming region, is also an oil and gas exploration and manufacturing center. Major industries include pipeline construction, chemical plants, meat packing, construction, oilfield construction and servicing, and food processing. The city was the first to establish a municipal airport and has long been the Gateway to the North. It is easily accessible by air, rail, bus and car. It is also home to the Alberta Research Council and Edmonton Research Park.
