Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is an independent, nonsectarian, nonprofit coeducational university with a history dating back to the early days of aviation. Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; Telephone: 404-679-4501) to award degrees at the associate, bachelor's, and master's levels. Residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona, provide education in a traditional setting. The Extended Campus network of education centers throughout the United States and Europe and the distance learning program serve civilian and military working adults around the world. Embry-Riddle has served the public and private sectors of aviation through education for more than seventy years and is the only accredited not-for-profit university in the world totally oriented to aviation/aerospace. Alumni are employed in all facets of civilian and military aviation.
Distance Learning Program
Taking courses or completing a college degree in a traditional classroom environment doesn't work for everyone. Airline professionals have to deal with irregular schedules, and individuals serving in the military, civil service, or other industries spend significant amounts of time on the road. In addition, anyone juggling family life with a busy career knows there is not much time left over to go back to school.
For more than twenty years, Embry-Riddle has been offering Web-based courses and degree programs through its Distance Learning Enrollment Office. Today, the distance learning program encompasses a broad spectrum of classes and degrees offered entirely online, allowing students to take a course or two or earn their entire associate, bachelor's, or master's degree.
In terms of flexibility, Embry-Riddle's distance learning program allows students to complete assignments, join discussions, study, and ask questions. This dynamic educational method gives adult learners the flexibility and convenience of pursuing a degree via the Internet, regardless of their geographic location.
Through Embry-Riddle's commitment to innovative teaching and to learning excellence, convenience, and interaction, online learning through the Distance Learning Enrollment Office helps students realize personal and professional goals anywhere in the world.
With Embry-Riddle's, online learning program, students may be at home, but they are never on their own. Faculty members assigned to the Web-based classes are as accessible and supportive as they are in the classroom, and online learners develop a strong sense of community and camaraderie through online support groups, e-mail discussion forums, and an online help desk.
To discover more about the distance learning programs offered online or for enrollment information, prospective students may visit an Extended Campus Learning Center, visit the Distance Learning Enrollment Office Web site, or contact an adviser.
Delivery Media
The distance learning associate, bachelor's, and master's degree courses are delivered via the Internet. Each class is hosted on a private Embry-Riddle Web site, where students and professors interact by way of a bulletin board–type discussion forum. As a result, students are not required to log on to the Web site at specific times, but they may access their course work at a time of day that is most convenient to them. To participate in a distance learning class, students need accees to a personal computer and the World Wide Web. Students who do not have access to the Web from home can usually gain access through their local library, military base education center, Embry-Riddle resident center or another public facility.
Programs of Study
At the graduate level, Embry-Riddle offers the Master of Aeronautical Science (M.A.S.) degree and the Master of Science in Management (M.S.M.) degree.
The M.A.S. degree, with specializations in aeronautics operations, education, human factors, management, safety, space operations management, or space studies, requires 36–39 semester hours of course work. The M.A.S. program enables aviation/aerospace professionals to master the application of concepts, methods, and tools used in the development, manufacture, and operation of aircraft and spacecraft as well as the public and business infrastructure that support them. The degree gives air traffic control personnel, aviation educators, flight crew members, flight operations specialists, and industry technical representatives an unequaled opportunity to enhance their knowledge and pursue additional opportunities. The special intricacies of aviation are woven into a strong, traditional management foundation and examined in greater detail through a wide variety of electives. M.A.S. core topics include air transportation, aircraft and space craft development, human factors in aviation/aerospace, and research methods and statistics. Specialization courses provide a strong knowledge base of subject material. The courses provide the student with skills needed in the professional arena. Electives and a graduate research project provide students with the ability to tailor their degrees, adding greater breadth and depth in aviation/aerospace–related intellectual pursuits.
The M.S.M. degree program is targeted for those students (or those organizations sponsoring students) who need and desire a focused management degree but are looking for a degree with a greater operational approach than a traditional M.B.A. The degree is a 36-semester-hour program, which comprises a strong management core of 24 semester hours and the opportunity for several different areas of concentration or specialization.
Undergraduate degree offerings include Associate in Science and Bachelor of Science degree programs in professional aeronautics, Associate in Science and Bachelor of Science degree programs in technical management, the Bachelor of Science degree in technical management–logistics, the Bachelor of Science in technical management–occupational safety and health, the Bachelor of Science degree in aviation maintenance management, and an Associate in Science degree in aircraft maintenance technology. The professional aeronautics degree program is designed specifically for students who work, have worked, or desire to work in aviation-related careers. For students with existing aviation-related knowledge and skills, the program recognizes those skills by awarding advanced-standing, prior-learning credit. The curriculum then builds upon those skills. The program also provides a path for those students new to aviation to acquire these skills through aviation-related courses. The Bachelor of Science in professional aeronautics requires 120 semester hours, and the Associate in Science in professional aeronautics requires 60 semester hours.
The Bachelor of Science degree in technical management is 120 semester hours, and the Associate in Science in technical management is 60 semester hours. In the technical management degree program, students learn how to apply specific management skills to their technical specialty. The degree program prepares students for supervisory and management positions in various segments of civilian and military aviation.
The Bachelor of Science degree in aviation maintenance management is 126 semester hours. In this degree program, students gain the management skills needed to effectively manage aviation maintenance. Students who already have their Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance Certificate gain a comprehensive business foundation that complements the FAA certification. Although the program is geared toward aviation and aerospace, its curriculum prepares graduates for success with companies in any industry.
The Associate in Science in aircraft maintenance technology program offers experienced maintenance technicians an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of aviation maintenance while gaining a solid foundation in the principles of management and communication. Students who enter the program holding an FAA Airframe & Powerplant Certificate are awarded 30 credit hours toward their degree. Others can earn their certificate as part of the overall curriculum. Students may also apply Associate in Science in aviation maintenance technology credits toward an Embry-Riddle bachelor's degree in aviation maintenance management or any of the other related degrees.
Through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's online learning department a student may choose to complete a certificate of completion to gain valuable academic knowledge to accompany their professional experience. Certificates of completion are offered in a variety of areas at both the undergraduate and graduate academic level.
