DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM

Since 1970, Embry-Riddle has provided educational opportunities for professionals working in civilian and military aviation and aerospace careers. To meet the varied needs of the adult working student, Embry-Riddle established the Extended Campus, which includes the College of Career Education's classroom and distance learning operations. The Extended Campus maintains a comprehensive system of academic quality control, sustaining the requirements and elements of courses as delivered on the residential campuses. The curricula, academic standards, and academic policies are the same throughout the University and are modified only to accommodate certain requirements resulting from different delivery methods. The College of Career Education provides working adults with the opportunity to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees through a network of teaching centers spread across the United States and Europe and through distance learning. The College operates more than 130 resident centers and teaching sites in thirty-seven states and five European nations. Resident centers and teaching sites are found at or near major aviation industry installations, both civilian and military. When students are not located near a center or a teaching site, they can enroll in many of the same programs through distance learning. All teaching centers and the distance learning programs are approved for veterans' educational benefits. Students receive personalized academic advisement whether they take their classes in the classroom or by distance learning. Classroom instruction is conducted during hours convenient for working students, and distance learning students can work on their studies at any time and at any place that is convenient for them. Degree requirements are completed through a combination of course work, transfer credit, and prior learning assessment or by achieving the University's required scores in standardized national testing programs, such as CLEP or DANTES.

DELIVERY MEDIA

The distance learning associate, bachelor's, and master's degree courses are delivered via the Internet. Each class is hosted on a private Embry-Riddle Web site, where students and professors interact by way of a bulletin board–type discussion forum. As a result, students are not required to log on to the Web site at specific times, but they may access their course work at a time of day that is most convenient to them. To participate in a distance learning class, students need access to a personal computer and the World Wide Web. Students who do not have access to the Web from home can usually gain access through their local library, military base education center, Embry-Riddle resident center, or another public facility.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is an independent, nonsectarian, non-profit coeducational university with a history dating back to the early days of aviation. Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; Telephone: 404-679-4501) to award degrees at the associate, bachelor's, and master's levels. Residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona, provide education in a traditional setting. The Extended Campus network of education centers throughout the United States and Europe and the distance learning program serve civilian and military working adults around the world. Embry-Riddle has served the public and private sectors of aviation through education for more than seventy years and is the only accredited not-for-profit university in the world totally oriented to aviation/aerospace. Alumni are employed in all facets of civilian and military aviation.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

At the graduate level, Embry-Riddle offers the Master of Aeronautical Science (M.A.S.) degree and the Master of Science in Management (M.S.M.) degree. The M.A.S. degree, with specializations in aeronautics operations, management, human factors, safety, education, space studies, or space operations management requires 36–39 semester hours of course work. The M.A.S. program enables aviation/aerospace professionals to master the application of concepts, methods, and tools used in the development, manufacture, and operation of aircraft and spacecraft, as well as the public and business infrastructure that support them. The degree gives air traffic control personnel, aviation educators, flight crew members, flight operations specialists, and industry technical representatives an unequaled opportunity to enhance their knowledge and pursue additional opportunities. The special intricacies of aviation are woven into a strong, traditional management foundation and examined in greater detail through a wide variety of electives. M.A.S. core topics include air transportation, aircraft and space craft development, human factors inaviation/aerospace, and research methods and statistics. Specialization courses provide a strong knowledge base of subject material. The courses provide the student with skills needed in the professional arena. Electives and a graduate research project provide students with the ability to tailor their degrees, adding greater breadth and depth in aviation/aerospace–related intellectual pursuits.

The M.S.M. degree program is targeted for those students (or those organizations sponsoring students) who need and desire a focused management degree but are looking for a degree with a greater operational approach than a traditional M.B.A. The degree is a 36-semester-hour degree program, which comprises a strong management core of 24 semester hours and the opportunity for several different areas of concentration or specialization.

Undergraduate degree offerings include Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degree programs in professional aeronautics, Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degree programs in technical management, the Bachelor of Science degree in technical management–logistics, the Bachelor of Science degree in aviation maintenance management, and an Associate of Science degree in aircraft maintenance. The professional aeronautics degree program is designed specifically for students who work, have worked, or desire to work in aviation related careers. For students with existing aviation-related knowledge and skills, the program recognizes those skills through award of advanced standing prior-learning credit. The curriculum then builds upon those skills. The program also provides a path for those students new to aviation to acquire these skills through aviation-related courses. The Bachelor of Science in professional aeronautics requires 120 semester hours, and the Associate of Science in professional aeronautics requires 60 semester hours.

The Bachelor of Science degree in technical management is 120 semester hours, and the Associate of Science in technical management is 60 semester hours. In the technical management degree program, students learn how to apply specific management skills to their technical specialty. The degree program prepares students for supervisory and management positions in various segments of civilian and military aviation.

The Bachelor of Science degree in aviation maintenance management is 126 semester hours. In this degree program, students gain the management skills needed to effectively manage aviation maintenance. Students who already have their Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance Certificate gain a comprehensive business foundation that complements the FAA certification. Although the program is geared toward aviation and aerospace, its curriculum prepares graduates for success with companies in any industry.

The Associate of Science degree in aircraft maintenance offers special aircraft maintenance technology courses to students who are experienced, but unlicensed, aircraft specialists. These courses deal largely with the problems, considerations, and practices involved in maintaining aircraft in airworthy condition based on the body of knowledge required of experienced aircraft maintenance specialists under Federal Aviation Regulations, Part 65.
