Schwartz, Martha
Schwartz, Martha (1950– ). American land-scape-architect. She worked (1976–82) with Sasaki and then (1984–90) with Walker. Among her designs the Bagel Garden (with shellac-painted bagels, pebbles, and box-hedges), Back Bay, Boston, MA (1979), the King County Gaol Plaza, Seattle, WA (1982–7—using ceramics), the roof-garden at the Institute for Biomedical Research, Cambridge, MA (1985–6), and the Jacob Javits Plaza, NYC (1996), displayed her Minimalist tendencies. For the Rio Shopping Center, Atlanta, GA (designed by Arquitectonica), she created the plaza complete with large gilded frogs (1988). Other schemes employed wild flowers and grasses, mounds of ceramic tiles, and water-features, in many of which aspects of popular art, Land Art, and even Kitsch, were combined. In the UK she created Exchange Square, Manchester, on SLOAP between the old Corn Exchange and new buildings replacing the bombed Arndale Centre (2000–2).
