Peichl, Gustav
Peichl, Gustav (1928– ). Leading Austrian architect. His early work made references to the International Modernism of the 1930s but in the 1960s he began to experiment with the expression of services, as in the Rehabilitation Centre for the Mentally Retarded at Vienna-Meidling (1965–7). His best-known buildings are the regional studios of the Austrian State Radio (ÖRF), where the various elements are grouped around large tall entrance-halls through which shiny metalwork is exposed. Good examples are the ÖRF studios at Salzburg (1968–72) and Eisenstadt (1981–3) which exploit the Machine Aesthetic. Later still, he appears to have become more interested in contextual design, as with the extension to the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (1987–90). Throughout his career he has been well known as the caricaturist ‘Ironimus’.
