hyperammonaemia High blood ammonia concentrations, especially after protein intake, leading to coma, convulsions, and possibly death. May be due to a variety of genetic diseases affecting amino acid metabolism. Treatment is normally by severe restriction of protein intake. See also amino acid disorders.
