Gau, Franz Christian

Gau, Franz Christian (1790–1853). German-born architect. He settled in Paris from 1810, travelled in Italy and Egypt, and published his Antiquités de la Nubie (Antiquities of Nubia—1822–7) as well as important work on Pompeii (1829 and 1838). In 1839 he was appointed architect for the distinguished and scholarly Gothic Revival Church of Ste-Clotilde, Paris (begun 1846), completed by Ballu.
