Eschwege, Wilhelm Ludwig, Baron von
Eschwege, Wilhelm Ludwig, Baron von (1777–1855). German engineer and army officer. He settled in Portugal, and designed the Palácio da Pena (1839–49), near Sintra, including the enlargement of the ruined monastery of Nossa Senhora da Pena. Influenced by contemporary English and German developments in the Gothic Revival, it also embraced Manueline themes from Sintra and Tomar, so is an early C19 example of Portuguese eclecticism.
