baked Alaska Dessert of ice cream on a sponge base and covered with meringue, baked in a hot oven for a very short time, so that the meringue is cooked but the ice cream remains frozen. Earlier called omelette norvégienne or Norwegian omelette. Invented by chef Charles Ranhofer at Delmonico's restaurant in New York, 1867.
