ADDRESSES FOR SECURITY AND IDENTITY

A computer offering a service to the network is like an apartment building. The building itself has only one street address; in the case of the network server, that would be the IP address. But each apartment inside has a number that differentiates it from the others. In this analogy, each service offered by the server has a specific number, as each apartment does. In the case of the network server, that number is called a port ID.
