Sidelights
British illustrator Kate Sheppard has provided the artwork for more than one hundred works of fiction and nonfiction for young readers. She has enjoyed successful collaborations with authors such as Terry Deary, Tracey Turner, Mike Yaconelli, Natalie Grice, and Alison Prince. Sheppard has also teamed with writer Claire Llewellyn to produce a critically acclaimed series of books that look at the everyday concerns of nature's creatures.
In Llewellyn's Ask Dr. K. Fisher about Animals, which is formatted as an advice column, the kindly doctor offers helpful advice to a tadpole that is concerned about its rapidly changing body, an orb spider that seeks help with relationships, a giraffe that is embarrassed by the length of its neck, and a dung beetle that wants to change its diet. "Sheppard's brightly colored cartoon illustrations are fabulously quirky," observed a critic in Kirkus Reviews. A Publishers Weekly contributor also offered praise for the work, stating that "Sheppard's illustrations feature an expressive cast of creatures in a collage-like assemblage of Polaroid-style photos, dog-eared letters, envelopes and more." In Ask Dr. K. Fisher about Dinosaurs, a companion volume that also features Llewellyn's text, the helpful columnist answers queries from, among others, a Diplodocus concerned about its weight. According to School Library Journal reviewer Donna Atmur, Ask Dr. K. Fisher about Dinosaurs benefits from Sheppard's "humorous watercolor cartoons."
