Sidelights

Buket Erdogan is originally from Istanbul, Turkey where she studied the art of Turkish textiles. After moving to New York City, she drew on her creative talent and began designing children's clothing and illustrating children's picture books. Characteristic of Erdogan's collage art and illustration is her use of bright colors and her incorporation of Turkish textiles. The vibrant illustrations that result are featured in her collaborations with author Lauren Thompson: the "Mouse" children's book series.

Erdogan and Thompson's "Mouse" series focuses on the adventures of a young mouse as he experiences new and exciting things around him. In Mouse's First Fall Mouse experiences a delightful autumn day: he and friend Minka play in the colorful fall leaves and Mouse learns how to create a pile of leaves high enough to jump in. In School Library Journal, Susan Lissim noted that Erdogan's illustrations for Mouse's First Fall include cheerful colors that "evoke the season" and feature "swirling brushstrokes and texture [that] add interest to the paintings." In Mouse's First Summer author and illustrator focus on another season as Mouse and Minka explore their summer days together playing in the grass and eating and drinking all the traditional summer foods. Gay Lynn Van Vleck, in a review of the book for School Library Journal, noted that Erdogan's "jewel-toned acrylics … create a sumptuous backdrop for this sensory-rich adventure."
