polioencephalitis (poh-li-oh-en-sef-ă-ly-tis) n. a virus infection of the brain, causing particular damage to the grey matter of the cerebral hemispheres and the brainstem. The term is now usually restricted to infections of the brain by the poliomyelitis virus.
