Poliedro, Giovanni Battista

Poliedro, Giovanni Battista , Italian violinist and composer; b. Piovà, Casale Monferrato, near Turin, June 10, 1781; d. there, Aug. 15, 1853. He studied in Asti and with Pugnani in Turin, where he became a violinist in the royal orch. After touring northern Italy from 1798, he became concertmaster of the Bergamo theater orch. in 1804. Soon thereafter, he went to Moscow to play in Prince Tatishcev’s serf orch. From 1811 he made successful tours of Germany. He was concertmaster of the Dresden court orch. from 1814 to 1824. From 1824 to 1844 he was maestro di cappella at the Turin court. He wrote several violin concertos, sacred music, chamber pieces, and violin studies.
