SIDELIGHTS: Alan F. Zundel told CA: "My first published piece was an autobiographical essay about my experiences with meditation, published in Spiritual Life Journal a couple decades ago. I had developed an intense interest in spirituality and comparative religions, and the article was the outgrowth of a few years of exploring those topics.

"Shortly after that I returned to college to major in religious studies, and my writing efforts were directed to papers for my classes. A concern about economic justice and the plight of the inner-city poor led to graduate study in political science, and eventually to an M.A. and a Ph.D. My dissertation became my first book, Declarations of Dependency: The Civic Republican Tradition in U.S. Poverty Policy. I have also published several academic articles related to various aspects of public policy and economic justice, and I am planning a book on economic justice and democracy.

"In the meantime an early interest in fiction returned, and I wrote a novel loosely based on my early experiences with meditation, but now with the perspective of many more years of experience with meditation and spiritual growth. My writing interests seem to be gravitating back to the spiritual themes very strongly, and I hope and expect to continue writing fiction as an outlet for this."
