Several reviewers commented favorably on the geographical scope of the volume, noting that the book covers parts of Canada's middle provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to the north, and extends south to include parts of Texas and New Mexico. Writing in Booklist, contributor Diana Shonrock called Encyclopedia of the Great Plains "a unique reference book" that proves "valuable for a wide variety of user groups."
