SIDELIGHTS: Joe Wise once told CA: "I have a lifelong love of words and the Rocky Mountain Southwest. My desire to write 'history-based' fiction was unsatisfied for years, due to the demands of medical practice. My work was first published in 1993, in Journal of the West, after ten years of research on John Fremont's fourth expedition. My first real break came with the publication of a travel article in the New York Times. The best advice I ever got about writing was from Tony Hillerman: 'Just write the first chapter. You're going to rewrite it five times anyway.' He helped me finally get started on the novel I had been thinking about for years."
