OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born July 22, 1923, in Westchester, Nova Scotia, Canada; died November 21, 2003, in Rock Hill, SC. Educator, administrator, and author. An ordained Episcopal minister, Webb spent his career as a historian and professor who specialized in American diplomatic reconstruction history and British history. A Royal Canadian Air Force veteran who served during World War II, he earned a B.A. in history from Acadia University in 1949; for graduate school, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, receiving an M.A. in 1951 and a Ph.D. in 1956. Webb's teaching career began at Pittsburgh, where he was an instructor while studying for his doctorate. He then taught for a year at the University of Kentucky before joining the Winthrop College faculty in 1967 as a professor and chair of the department of history, government, and geography. From 1968 to 1975, Webb was dean of faculty and vice president of academic affairs, and in 1977 he was named Distinguished Professor of History. Awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for service to his college in 1981, Webb retired in 1989 but continued to teach courses at Winthrop; he also remained active as the college's historian. Webb published several books during and after his teaching career, including The Alaskan Boundary Dispute, 1779-1903 (1951), A Book of Remembrance (1956), and Kentucky in the Reconstruction Era (1978). His last book, a history of Winthrop College title The Torch Is Passed, was published in 2002.
