ADAPTATIONS: Villaggio's novel Fantozzi was adapted into a screenplay by Leonardo Benvenuti, Piero de Bernardi, and Luciano Salce.

SIDELIGHTS: Italian comic actor Paolo Villaggio is best known for creating the character Ugo Fantozzi, a hapless, put-upon office worker. Fantozzi first appeared in a novel of the same name by Villaggio in 1971, and four years later, a low-budget film based on the novel and starring Villaggio as Fantozzi became a surprise hit and spawned an ongoing series. Throughout the Fantozzi films and novels, Fantozzi struggles against the myriad insults of life but never really overcomes them, giving the stories a biting sense of black humor.
