SIDELIGHTS:

Amanda Trimble was raised and educated in Illinois, attended the University of Illinois and DePaul University, and lived for five years in Chicago, where she worked as a copywriter. She also studied abroad, both at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and at academies in Finland and Japan. Her short fiction has appeared in such periodicals as Teen, and her first book, Singletini: A Novel, was published in 2006. The book tells the story of Victoria Hart, who makes a pact with her college girlfriends that they will all become "singletinis": women who have jobs, boyfriends, money, and martini parties. By the time Victoria is twenty-four, she is living in Chicago and enjoying the life she has built according to the pact, until things start to go terribly wrong. She loses her job, one of her friends gets engaged, and Victoria decides she needs to reassess her goals. In need of gainful employment, she begins coaching men on how to act in various social situations to best attract a woman. A contributor for Publishers Weekly found that "one wacky humiliation after another detracts from the juicy banter and clever inclusion of faux horoscopes and news articles." However, Carolyn Kubisz, in a review for Booklist, wrote: "In her first novel, Trimble creates an obviously flawed but likable heroine."
