SIDELIGHTS:
Augustine Thompson is an academic and historian. Born on July 21, 1954, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1976 from Johns Hopkins University. That same year he also completed a master of arts degree from the same university. Thompson then undertook studies at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology. He earned a second bachelor of arts degree, this time in philosophy, in 1980 and went on to complete a master of divinity in 1985. Thompson completed his higher education with a Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in 1988. Thompson eventually became an associate professor of religious studies and history at the University of Virginia.
Thompson published his first book, Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth-Century Italy: The Great Devotion of 1233, in 1992. He then translated Gratian's The Treatise on Laws: (Decretum DD. 1-20) in 1993. That account also contained an introduction by Katherine Christensen and its Ordinary gloss was translated by James Gordley. In 2005 Thompson published Cities of God: The Religion of the Italian Communes, 1125-1325. Thompson contributes to a number of periodicals and academic journals, including Nova et Vetera, Archivum Fratrum Praedicatorum, Studia Canonica, Journal of the History of Philosophy, Angelicum, Church History, Cîteaux, and English Language Notes.
