SIDELIGHTS:

Dave Shields told CA: "Writing novels has been a decade-long journey for me. My first published novel was a family saga that got rave reviews but only resulted in moderate sales. For my second novel I wanted to come up with a concept that nobody could resist, but I couldn't get the idea of writing a story about the Tour de France out of my mind. Finally I decided that I'd have to write the book just so I could think straight and get on to my next project. Amazingly it became a best seller on a couple of lists, won a variety of awards, and resulted in a stream of mail from readers asking about a sequel. As a result I completed a second Tour de France novel, this time dealing with the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The research has been fascinating and has taken the book far beyond the scope I initially envisioned for it. Early reader reaction has been enthusiastic."
