See index for CA sketch: Born May 7, 1937, in New York, NY; died of complications from lung cancer January 21, 2004, in York, PA. Historian, educator, and author. Shapiro was a history professor noted for his interest in Appalachia that led to his book Appalachia on Our Mind: The Southern Mountains and Mountaineers in the American Consciousness, 1870-1920 (1978). Earning his bachelor's from Columbia University in 1958, his master's from Cornell University in 1960, and his doctorate from Rutgers University in 1966, he began his career at Rutgers as an assistant instructor in 1960. A brief stint at the Manhattan School of Music in 1963 was followed by three years at Ohio State University. In 1966, Shapiro joined the University of Cincinnati faculty, becoming a full professor of history in 1979 and retiring in 1988. Specializing in American history, he won the W. D. Weatherford Prize in 1979 for his Appalachia on Our Mind, which remains a standard reference on the subject; he was also the author of Confiscation of Confederate Property in the North (1962) and coauthor of Clifton: Neighborhood and Community in an Urban Setting (1976), as well as editor and contributor to other works. With an interest in literature, as well, Shapiro served for a time as vice chair of the Cleveland Arts Prize.
