SEAGER, Robert II 1924-2004

See index for CA sketch: Born September 12, 1924, in Nanking, China; died July 21, 2004, in Fairfax, VA. Historian, educator, and author. Seager was a retired history professor and critically acclaimed author and editor of nonfiction and biographies who was once nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. He graduated from Rutgers University with a B.A. in 1948, from Columbia University with an M.A. in 1949, and from Ohio State University with a Ph.D. in 1956, as well as doing postdoctoral study at Johns Hopkins. His first position was at Denison University in Ohio, where he taught American history from 1949 to 1961. Afterwards, he taught at several other institutions, including at the U.S. Naval Academy during the 1960s; the University of Maine at Orono, where he was a professor chair of the history department in the late 1960s; Washington College, where he was also a professor and academic dean from 1970 to 1972; and the University of Baltimore, where he was a professor of American history and vice president for academic affairs from 1972 to 1977. His last job was at the University of Kentucky at Lexington, where he was a professor from 1977 until his 1987 retirement. Seager was interested in military, diplomatic, and American history and was the author of several biographies and editor of other works. His And Tyler Too: A Biography of John and Julia Gardiner Tyler (1963) was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Other works by Seager include Alfred Thayer Mahan: The Man and His Letters (1977) and edited and co-edited works that include America's Major Wars: Crusaders, Critics, and Scholars, 1775-1972 (1973) and Letters and Papers of Alfred Thayer Mahan (1975).
