SIDELIGHTS:

Susan M. Schultz is an English professor and poet. She moved from Virginia to Hawaii in 1990, and since that time has taught at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu. She is also the editor of Tinfish, a journal specializing in experimental poetry from the Pacific region. Along with work published in traditional print venues, Schultz has published numerous poems and chapbooks online with electronic journals. She is a supporter of the Electronic Poetry Project at the State University of New York in Buffalo—" a gateway to resources in electronic poetry," according to its Web site, which disseminates the online version of Tinfish.

Schultz has published numerous poetry chapbooks. Memory Cards: The Happiness Project is a collection of prose poems on everyday events. Poems in this collection were previously published in periodicals. Holding Patterns is one long meditative poem published in book format. Aleatory Allegories is a collection of Schultz's poetry, which a reviewer for Publishers Weekly called "a chaotic ride through a series of material and linguistic transformations." In her article "Susan M. Schultz's Aleatory Allegories," found on the Bucknell University Web site, Janet Bowdan observed, "Schultz's allegories reward their reading and deserve re-reading; their attention to the world demonstrates how it is in caring for the small, chance-met things that you find what you need."

Schultz also edited The Tribe of John: Ashbery and Contemporary Poetry, a collection of twelve essays about the poetry of Ashbery. Pat Righelato in Modern Language Review called the book a "stimulating collection of critical essays of the 1990s."
