SIDELIGHTS:

A world-renowned fisherman, Ken Schultz has also written extensively about fish and fishing. In Ken Schultz's Fishing Encyclopedia: Worldwide Angling Guide, the author provides information on both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Schultz discusses more than 500 different species of fish and the proper techniques for catching them, from the type of fishing rod and tackle to the proper boat to use. He also explores fish conservation throughout the world. Brian E. Coutts and John B. Richard, writing in the Library Journal, noted that the book "conveys the joy and excitement of fishing." The author focuses on one of the most popular fishing tournaments in the United States in his book Bass Madness: Bigmouths, Big Money and Big Dreams at the Bassmaster Classic. Schultz looks at two consecutive tournaments: the 2005 tournament held in Pittsburgh and the 2006 contest held at Florida's Upper Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. In addition to writing about the tournament, including its political infighting, the author also provides a modern history of competitive fishing. New York Times Book Review contributor Field Maloney called the book "an entertaining picaresque." David Pitt, writing in Booklist, commented that Bass Madness "should appeal to both pro-fishing fans and readers whose minds boggle at the whole idea."
