Schmandt, Raymond H(enry, Jr.) 1925-2005

OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born September 20, 1925, in Indianapolis, IN; died of pneumonia February 22, 2005, in Media, PA. Historian, educator, and author. Schmandt was a professor emeritus at St. Joseph's University who specialized in medieval history. He received his A.B. in 1947 and M.A. in 1949 from St. Louis University, and then attended the University of Michigan to earn an M.A. in German literature and Ph.D. in history in 1952. His academic career began at DePaul University, where he was a history instructor and then assistant professor until 1958. He taught at Loyola University from 1958 until 1966, when he joined the St. Joseph's faculty. He would remain there until he retired in 1995, having also served as chair of his department from 1973 until 1976 and as head of medieval and Renaissance studies. He was the coauthor of such books as History of the Catholic Church (1957; second edition, 1965) and Europe and Asia (1963), and the author of The Crusades: Origin of an Ecumenical Problem (1967). In 2000, Schmandt was honored by St. Joseph's when the university named a lecture series after him.
