Schmid, Heinrich Kaspar

Schmid, Heinrich Kaspar, German composer and teacher; b. Landau an der Isar, Bavaria, Sept. 11, 1874; d. Munich, Jan. 8, 1953. He studied with Thuille and Bussmeyer at the Munich Academy of Music (1899–1903). In 1903 he went to Athens, where he taught music at the Odeon; in 1905 he returned to Munich and was on the faculty of the Academy of Music until 1921; then was director of the Karlsruhe Cons. (1921–24) and of the Augsburg Cons. (1924–32). His eyesight failed him and he was totally blind during the last years of his life. As a composer, he followed the Romantic tradition of the Bavarian School; he wrote a great number of lieder, and composed Singspiels in a folklike manner, as well as choruses and chamber music.
