Kevin Sack, a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for "The Vertical Vision," a four-part series about a controversial military program. Sack and colleague Alan Miller spent months investigating the U.S. Marine Corps AV-8 Harrier jet, an aircraft with a history of failures that had resulted in the deaths of forty-five pilots. "Anything that could go wrong with it did," Sack told Bailey White in the Jacksonville Daily Record. "There were mechanical problems related to the engine and the wing flaps and a host of outrageous maintenance problems. And it was a complicated plane, mechanically; pilots talked about needing three hands to fly it."
The Pulitzer Prize for national reporting that he received for his Marine Corps Harrier investigation was the second for Sack. In 2000, as a member of the New York Times staff, he also shared the Pulitzer for national reporting for the investigative article "How Race Is Lived in America."
