Sachse, Leopold
Sachse, Leopold , German-American bass, opera producer, and administrator; b. Berlin, Jan. 5, 1880; d. Englewood, N.J., April 3, 1961. He studied at the Cologne Cons., then in Vienna. In 1902 he joined the Strasbourg Opera as a baritone. He then was Intendant in Münster (1907), Halle (1914–19), and at the Hamburg Opera (1922–33), where he produced a number of contemporary works. He was forced to leave his homeland by the Nazis and settled in the U.S. He was a producer at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. (1935–55), and also taught stage technique at the Juilliard Graduate School in N.Y. (1936–43); was a stage director at the N.Y.C. Opera (from 1945). He founded his own Opera in English Co. (1951).
