SIDELIGHTS: Mary A. Rouse once told CA: "My husband and I are medieval historians who specialize in the culture that surrounds the handwritten books—the manuscripts—that served European readers from the beginning of history until the spread of the printing press in the late fifteenth century. From the beginning of our marriage, we have collaborated in the writing of everything we have produced. We are unique among our medievalist colleagues in working in this fashion and, surprisingly enough, we still remain rather good friends after all these years of trampling each other's egos."
