SIDELIGHTS:
Daniel Roche is a professor of history at the Collège de France in Paris and a preeminent historian of eighteenth-century French history. France in the Enlightenment explores the effects of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment period on the people of France from the perspective of those who experienced it. More than just a history of the Enlightenment, reported Marmo Mullaney in a Library Journal review, the work is "social and intellectual history combined." William Doyle noted in the New York Times Book Review that Roche "knows the world of eighteenth-century France both from the top down and from the bottom up; and nobody is better qualified to take a synoptic view of its whole society and culture…. [France in the Enlightenment] is the best cultural history of that extraordinary episode now available." Mullaney cautioned that the work, by "its very complexity, length, and scope will limit its appeal to specialists in the field."
