PHELPS, O(rme) Wheelock 1906-2003

See index for CA sketch: Born July 5, 1906, in Hobart, OK; died July 3, 2003, in Claremont, CA. Educator and author. Phelps was a former professor of economics and dean at Claremont McKenna College. A graduate of the University of Chicago, where he earned his doctorate in 1945, he remained at Chicago as an assistant professor and dean until 1947, when he became one of the first faculty members of the newly founded Claremont Men's College and Graduate School (later Claremont McKenna College). He was senior professor of economics there and served as dean from 1970 to 1974, when he retired but remained active at Claremont McKenna for many more years. Phelps was the author of Introduction to Labor Economics (1950; fourth edition, 1967), which was a required textbook at many universities for years, and Discipline and Discharge in the Unionized Firm (1959), as well as penning monographs and contributing to professional journals.
