SIDELIGHTS: Arthur R. Pell has authored or edited dozens of books about business management, including several in the "Complete Idiot's Guide" series. Pell, who is the senior vice president of the New Yorkbased Leadership Capital Group, specializes in the human resources field, and many of his works concentrate on this area of business management. He has also given many lectures on the subject. Born in 1920 in New York City, Pell began publishing books in 1963 with his debut work, Placing Salesmen, and the privately published Fire Officers Guide to Leadership.

An example of Pell's later work is his 2001 book, Embracing Excellence: Become an Employer of Choice to Attract and Keep the Best Talent, which he coauthored with Franklin C. Ashby. The critically lauded book offers advice to employers on how to recruit and retain exemplary employees, which the authors feel is a major challenge facing the corporate world. The book describes how companies can use a system Pell and Ashby developed called the Organizational MRI, which is designed to analyze corporate culture and show its relationship to employee retention. They also offer advice on how to find talented workers, as well as use effective screening procedures during the interviewing process. The book includes helpful lists of publications and Web sites that employers can use to find information about human resources, jobs, careers, and management.

Several critics lauded Embracing Excellence. Lucy Heckman of Library Journal called it "a practical and informative guide to strategies employers can use." Similarly, a contributor for Publishers Weekly referred to the book as "a solid reference for managers and HR professionals."

Pell once told CA: "The mission of my writing is to utilize my God-given talents to help others identify, develop, and make the most of their capabilities in their work and in their lives."
